We are dedicated to understanding how the extreme conditions encountered by materials in nuclear reactors -- radiation damage, corrosive environments, high stresses and high temperatures -- couple to impact the properties of the material. The Center for Performance and Design of Nuclear Waste Forms and Containers, which is shortened to“WastePD”, was established as an Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC) in 2016. The Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for the EFRCs referred to the report from a DOE workshop held lastyear on Basic Research Needs for Environmental Management (BRN-EM). The Basic Energy Sciences (BES) program supports basic scientific research to lay the foundations for new energy technologies and to advance DOE missions in energy, environment, and national security.

The EFRC is affiliated with the College of Engineering's Department of Aerospace Engineering and supports the class and individual projects of the university’s various undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral engineering students.
